Take a familiar form of poetry and twist it. Put the rhymes in your quatrains in the CENTER of your lines instead of the ends. Write a poem where the last letters of each line, taken together, spell out a message. Creating your own patterns within the confines of a form is an art form in itself. Give it a try and see what you come up with.

It’s the day before Thanksgiving here in the U.S. and I’m a bit of a traditionalist so - today’s writing prompt is grateful - but give it a twist. Don’t just write about the things for which you are grateful. Take the word and play with it. Some suggestions to get you started:
he should have been more grateful
expected to be grateful
not grateful
grate full
I was only grateful for
my most grateful moments

Gardens are a wonderful place for so many things, including writing and conceiving poetry. And yes, I use conceiving very deliberately, because I believe that poems are “born” as much as they are made. I was reminded of that full force in reading this post over at Herbal Connection. Marion writes: Buttercups and Bindweed, Fire Weed and Horsetail, Blackberry Vines and wild Geraniums…. doesn’t that just make you want to start a poem? If that’s not quite enough to get your creative juices flowing, read the post - the musings about each of the so-called weeds, their place in the garden and in Nature’s plan are sure to make you think of something.

writers are seldom only creative with words. use your other creative interests to fuel your muse. paint a portrait. dabble with your music. knit an afghan. color a picture with crayons. or do what Jared did and spend weeks dripping wax to create something unique.

A few years back, Poets Asylum used to feature an annual Barbie Night for poems inspired by our favorite plastic target. Any poem mentioning Barbie, inspired by Barbie or about Barbie qualified to be read. jillypoet’s post with two Barbie poems reminded me… so go on. Write about Barbie. You know you want to.
Check out jillypoet’s poems at jillypoet: mom trying to write: When Barbie Was My Muse - and then post your poem on your own blog. Drop a comment here and link back to your poem so we can all read it.
